The protection phase is one of the most exciting and dynamic portions of a canine competition.  Always a crowd favorite, K9 teams are tested on their ability to properly negotiate various problems presented to them in a fashion that demonstrates the courage, and temperament of the K9 in addition to the handlers control over his partner during stressful situations.  Decoys in protective clothing will confront the K9 teams.  Not all of the decoys will wear visible protection in an effort to avoid the canines from becoming equipment oriented.  The scenarios are announced just prior to the commencement of the protection phase in an effort to test the readiness of the competing teams and their ability to be effectively deployed.  Due to the importance of this phase of the competition, it also is worth the most points for the overall awards.
